You Were Good To Me Piano Sheet Music

I found this version of You Were Good To Me Piano Sheet Music online: You Were Good To Me

Usually, I’m not interested in this type of piano sheet music, because it has a vocal line. Which means that the piano part doesn’t include the vocal melody.

This can be a problem because the vocal melody is a key part of most songs. And I use my piano to do my singing for me… aka I can’t sing.

But this version of the sheet music had the intro sounding really nice. I mean, take a listen to this:

Lovely, isn’t it?

I definitely think so. Anyway, I decided to try incorporating the vocal line into the piano part myself. Below I’ll show you how I went about doing just that.

You Were Good To Me Piano Sheet Music Modification

Wow, that’s a mouthful!

So I’ve picked a line from the sheet music which will make for a good example. It’s actually one of the more problematic parts. You can see it just below, and what you’ll notice is that the piano part is basically just one chord that you hold over two bars (apart from the D to C note in the 3rd/4th bar).

This type of thing isn’t very interesting when it’s just you, your piano, and you don’t have anyone to sing the melody. Here’s what that would sound like:

Not all that exciting right? It’s just a couple of piano chords.

Well let’s see if we can fix it up… and make it unmistakably sound like You Were Good To Me.

Now, probably the easiest way to do that is:

  1. Move the chords into a lower register on the piano
  2. Modify the chords, where necessary, so that they can be played in the left hand only
  3. Play the melody in the right hand

If you do that, your modified piano sheet music should look and sound something like this:

To take it one step further, you can add some more rhythm to the left-hand part (without changing the chords at all). Something like this:

And there’s so much more you could do. It really can be a lot of fun to sit at your piano and see how you can modify sheet music like this.

Conclusion

I hope you enjoyed this post. And I hope you do go on to learn You Were Good To Me, and play it on your own piano.

It’s a lovely song, and the more piano playing that’s happening out there, the better.

If you’ve never tried modifying music before, why not give it a go? I hope my explanation above was easy enough to understand.

That’s about all for now.

Happy piano playing.
